6 Easy Ways to Create a Cozy, Inviting Fall Living Room

This fall, make your living room the coziest ever, thanks to these tips from Donna Garlough, style director of Joss & Main.

How to Get Cozy

When fall arrives, most of us think about switching up our wardrobes to better suit the cooler weather. But just as the perfect scarf or coat can transform your year-round wardrobe, the right touches can turn your living room into an enveloping winter retreat that will provide comfort in the cold days ahead. We turned to Joss & Main’s style director, Donna Garlough, for tips on making your family room as inviting as possible.

Make Room for Guests

Deck out your sitting area to make it a cozy gathering place. A few poufs and cozy throws, a tray for mugs and snacks, and you’ll have trouble getting anyone to leave—including yourself.

Choose a Signature Scent

It’s time to swap out your coconut and ocean breeze candles for warmer, richer fragrances. Garlough suggests amber and sandalwood as great options for the chillier months ahead. Mulling spices, like cinnamon and nutmeg, can also lend a seasonal scent: Just add the ingredients to a pot of water and simmer them on the stove.

Layer Floor Coverings

Layering two rugs adds dimension, Garlough says. Consider layering different patterns and materials, such as a fluffy flokati on a flatter hide-style rug.

Change Up Your Color Palette

Darker shades can have an immediate impact on the look and feel of a room, Garlough says. An easy way to adjust your color palette is with smaller accent pieces. Consider incorporating a few new items in darker shades of blue, red, orange, or green.

Use Textured Throw Pillows

Classic cable knit is a great go-to, or, consider incorporating a pattern such as plaid or herringbone. Quilts are another way to bring in texture, whether vintage or new. Try draping one over a chair, or using it as a colorful wall hanging.

Create a Warm Glow

Lighting can drastically impact the mood of a room, Garlough notes. Switch out your bulbs for a lower-wattage to create a warm glow and an inviting mood, and supplement with candles in hurricanes or sconces for a flickering, ambient glow.
