Here in North Carolina, there are many interesting facts about our state that many people may not be aware of. Heck, I wasn’t even aware of most of them until I did a little research!
Without further ado, here are the top 10 most interesting facts about North Carolina:
10. In 1914, Babe Ruth hit the first home run of his professional career in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
9. We grow more sweet potatoes in North Carolina, than in any other state in the country. The sweet potato is also the state vegetable of North Carolina.
8. In 1775, North Carolina declared its independence in the Mecklenburg Declaration.
7. The oldest State University in the nation is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

5. The largest home in the United States, is located right here in North Carolina. It’s called The Biltmore Estate, and it’s located in Ashville, North Carolina.
4. Mecklenburg County in North Carolina was the birth place of James K. Polk, the 11th President of the U.S.
3. In 1960, four black college students from a North Carolina University sat at a segregated lunch center, and were denied food. They continued their sit-ins until the lunch center ended their segregation policy. These college students were a key part in the civil rights movement.
2. North Carolina is the First In Flight. In 1903, the Wright Brothers were the first to succeed at building and flying a fully functional airplane near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
