Kitchen Fires: How to Prevent and Put out the Flames

Plumbing Workaround
An assortment of pipes and valves is the bane of under-sink space. To the rescue: A custom-made drawer ($150-$300) with carefully planned indentations and drawer depths that allow for drain pipes and water purifiers. Because it’s a drawer, everything pulls out and is right at your fingertips.

Roll-Out Organizer
This two-tiered, chrome-plated steel shelf ($75) is made specifically for under-sink installation. The shelf glides out on rollers, and the offset configuration is designed to avoid drain pipes and disposals. Recess the shelf back a couple of inches so you can put hooks on the inside of the door for hanging gloves and scrub brushes.

The Right Moves
This under-sink venue has the right stuff: An inexpensive snap-together organizer ($16) for supplies, and a waterproof shelf liner to keep drips from becoming stains. Also, the inside of the cabinet is painted white — the better to see what’s going on down there! There’s plenty of space for two garbage bins — one for trash and one for recycling.

Hooked On Organization
Over-the-door clothes hooks ($6) keep dish towels high and dry, out of sight, and close at hand (you might already have one or two hooks around the house that you can repurpose!) If you have kids, be sure to add child-proof locks on cabinet doors, especially under-sink cabs where cleaning solutions are stored.

Hang ‘Em High
Spray bottles have built-in hooks — their triggers — that you can use to store them. This clever homeowner has added an inexpensive tension rod that she uses to store spray bottles, suspending them from their triggers and taking advantage of the upper part of the cabinet.

Shelf-Liner: Your Cabinet’s BFF
Your under-sink cabinet space sees a lot of abuse — trash bins shoved in and out, spills, and drippy cleaners. Protect it with a waterproof, wipe-able shelf liner:
• Peel-and-stick vinyl is easy to cut around pipes and comes in colors and faux stainless steel.
• Leftover laminate pieces can be found at a countertop shop.
• Epoxy floor paint is tough and long-lasting.
• Real stainless steel liner pans can be custom-made; a 22-by-34-inch pan is $264.
Easy Does It
Low-cost ($16-$26) under-sink storage shelving kits let you configure a solution that meets your needs. Kit parts snap together or assemble with simple tools, so you can go from messy to marvelous in a matter of minutes. Kits include plastic shelves and rust-resistant supports.

A Good Turn
Put all your cleaning supplies right at your fingertips with a lazy-Susan turntable. An inexpensive plastic version ($10 for a 10-inch turntable) is waterproof and has a lip to prevent drips.
